At a ceremony formalizing the Giv'ot settlement on Wednesday night, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced plans to approve thousands of additional housing units to turn the community into a town, his office said. More than 800 units have already been cleared. The event, attended by local leaders and residents, also featured singer Shuli Rand.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich disclosed the expansion plan at a ceremony marking the formal recognition of Giv'ot as an independent settlement by the cabinet, coinciding with the approval of its first statutory plan (taba). The event was held late Wednesday night at the Giv'ot integration workshop complex. Smotrich, who also holds the title of minister within the Defense Ministry, stated that after more than 800 housing units had already been approved, his intention is to secure approval for thousands more, effectively turning the community into a city. Local council head Yaron Rosenthal praised Smotrich, saying he had doubled the number of settlements in the Gush Etzion region over three years. The Zioneer reported earlier Thursday that Smotrich had pledged to advance the thousands of additional units. The current announcement adds the concrete context of the formal celebration and the stated goal of city status.
