Opposition leaders filed a petition with the High Court of Justice on Tuesday against the coalition bill that would freeze arrests of Haredi yeshiva students who evade military service. Opposition leader Yair Lapid said the legislation is designed to 'allow the coalition to continue promoting mass Haredi draft dodging.'
The petition, filed by opposition parties Yesh Atid and Yisrael Beytenu on Tuesday, challenges the constitutionality of the bill that would exempt Haredi yeshiva students from arrest for evading military service. Opposition Leader Yair Lapid stated that the law is designed to enable the coalition to continue promoting mass Haredi draft dodging.
The Zioneer has previously reported on the bill's progression through the Knesset, including opposition from within the coalition and a letter from the IDF Chief of Staff that caused some coalition MKs to waver. The petition adds a new legal avenue to the ongoing political controversy over Haredi enlistment.
The High Court of Justice has not yet set a date for hearing the petition. The bill remains under legislative discussion.
