TL;DR

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been reconnected to the external power grid after repairs carried out under a localized ceasefire brokered by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The plant had lost all off-site power for nearly three days, prompting IAEA mediation between the involved parties.

01 · THE DISPATCH

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) in southeastern Ukraine was reconnected to the external power grid Monday afternoon, following repairs carried out under a localized ceasefire brokered by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The plant had been relying solely on emergency diesel generators after losing all off-site power for nearly three days, raising acute nuclear safety concerns at Europe's largest nuclear facility.

The repairs restored the 750 kV power line — the plant's primary connection — which had been disconnected for over two months. During that period, the plant had been operating on a single backup 330 kV line, leaving its six shutdown reactors dependent on a narrower safety margin for cooling. As The Zioneer reported on June 5, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi had negotiated a localized truce specifically to allow these repairs; that ceasefire marked the sixth such arrangement between Russia and Ukraine brokered by the IAEA since late last year.

The IAEA has described the situation at ZNPP as precarious. The plant, located on the front line of the war, has faced repeated power outages and shelling incidents since Russian forces seized it in early 2022. What remains unconfirmed is whether all six reactors have stable cooling restored, and whether the local ceasefire will hold long enough to complete further infrastructure repairs the IAEA has identified as necessary.
