Badr Unit
The Badr Unit is a primary territorial command of Hezbollah responsible for the organization's military operations in the central sector of southern Lebanon, specifically the region between the Litani River and the Israeli border. It maintains extensive underground infrastructure, including the strategic Ali Taher ridge complex, which served as a regional headquarters until its destruction by the IDF in September 2026.
The Badr Unit (Unit 8200 in Hezbollah's internal nomenclature) serves as one of the terror group's most critical operational pillars in southern Lebanon. Its area of responsibility covers the strategic heartland of the Nabatieh district, extending from the Litani River southward toward the Israeli border. Unlike the Radwan Force, which is an elite offensive unit, Badr is a territorial unit tasked with maintaining defensive lines, managing long-range fire capabilities, and overseeing the massive subterranean infrastructure built over two decades with direct Iranian funding and engineering expertise.
In mid-2026, the Badr Unit's strategic posture was severely compromised by a systematic IDF campaign. Central to this was the destruction of the Ali Taher ridge command complex, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described as the 'largest Iranian outpost outside Iran.' This network, comprising over 5.4 kilometers of tunnels reaching depths of 50 meters, functioned as the unit's regional nerve center. The IDF utilized approximately 1,100 tons of explosives to neutralize the site, an event so massive it registered as a 4.1-magnitude earthquake.
The unit's command structure has also faced significant degradation. In August 2026, the IDF eliminated Abu Hassan Alaa, a senior commander within the Badr Unit, in a targeted strike in the Deir al-Zahrani area. Alaa was instrumental in coordinating drone attacks and advancing tactical terror plots against Israeli forces. The loss of such high-level commanders, combined with the demolition of fortified command centers under the Beaufort and Ali Taher ridges, has significantly hampered the unit's ability to conduct large-scale coordinated operations. Despite these losses, the unit remains a primary focus of Israeli security operations due to its role in facilitating Iranian-backed aggression from Lebanese territory.
