Benny Gantz
Benny Gantz is an Israeli statesman, former IDF Chief of Staff, and leader of the National Unity party. A central figure in Israeli politics, he has served as Defense Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, often positioning himself as a centrist alternative to Benjamin Netanyahu while occasionally joining emergency governments during national crises.
Benny Gantz is a prominent Israeli political and military figure who served as the 20th Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (2011–2015). After entering politics in late 2018, he founded the Israel Resilience Party, which later merged into the Blue and White alliance and eventually the National Unity party. His political career has been defined by a complex relationship with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, characterized by intense electoral rivalry followed by periods of strategic cooperation in the interest of national stability.
Gantz's military background heavily influences his political platform, which emphasizes security-first policies, national resilience, and the preservation of Israel's democratic institutions. During his tenure as Defense Minister, he focused on strengthening Israel's qualitative military edge and managing the 'Campaign Between Wars' against Iranian entrenchment. He has frequently advocated for a broad-based approach to security that includes maintaining strong ties with the United States and fostering regional alliances.
In recent years, Gantz has faced internal political pressure regarding his decisions to join Netanyahu-led governments. While he frames these moves as 'putting Israel first' during emergencies—such as the COVID-19 pandemic or security escalations—critics within the opposition often target him for providing political legitimacy to Netanyahu. Most recently, Gantz has expressed frustration over being singled out for this cooperation, noting that other senior colleagues like Gadi Eisenkot and Chili Tropper have also participated in these frameworks without facing the same level of public scrutiny. Despite these challenges, Gantz remains a leading candidate for the premiership in various polling data, maintaining a significant following among voters seeking a security-oriented leadership that bridges traditional political divides.
