Kochav Yair
Kochav Yair is an affluent residential community in Israel's Sharon region, located near the Green Line. In June 2026, it became the initial site of a multi-location 'rolling' terror attack that left one dead and several wounded.
Kochav Yair is a prominent community in the northern Sharon region of central Israel. Known for its high quality of life and affluent demographic, the town is situated in close proximity to the Green Line—the pre-1967 armistice boundary that separates sovereign Israeli territory from Samaria. Due to its geographic position, the community and its surrounding infrastructure are sensitive nodes in Israel's internal security architecture. On June 7, 2026, Kochav Yair drew national attention as the starting point of a coordinated security incident. At approximately 10:40 a.m., a shooting attack was reported at a McDonald's gas station near the entrance to the community. Two civilians were wounded by gunfire from a moving vehicle, marking the beginning of what security forces described as a 'rolling' terror attack. The assailant, identified as Omar Yassin, a 21-year-old resident of Tayibe with Israeli citizenship, proceeded from the Kochav Yair junction to strike three other nearby locations: Tzur Yitzhak, Tzur Natan, and Sal'it. The spree resulted in the death of Chief Sgt. First Class (res.) Haim Kalomiti, 55, and injuries to five others. The attacker was eventually neutralized by security forces near the quarries between Tzur Natan and Tayibe, where an improvised 'Carlo' submachine gun was recovered. Following the event, Hamas military spokesman Abu Obeida praised the operation, while international figures, including Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, expressed solidarity with Israel. The incident has sparked local political debate regarding the legal constraints on the Shin Bet's ability to preemptively address such threats within Israeli-Arab communities.
