Mahmoud Fatair
Mahmoud Fatair was a Nukhba commander in the Palestinian Islamic Jihad's Central Gaza Brigade who participated in the October 7 massacre and was later documented overseeing hostage handovers in Gaza.
Mahmoud Fatair was a senior field operative and Nukhba commander within the Central Gaza Brigade of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terror organization. He gained notoriety for his direct involvement in the October 7, 2023, terror attacks, during which he infiltrated Israeli territory to participate in the massacre of civilians. Following the infiltration, Fatair played a significant role in the management and psychological warfare surrounding Israeli hostages held in the Gaza Strip.
Fatair was specifically identified as one of the captors responsible for holding Rom Braslavski, an Israeli civilian kidnapped during the attack. His role extended beyond mere guarding; he was a visible figure in the propaganda efforts of terror factions. During the "Heaven's Doors" operation in November 2023, Fatair was documented participating in the sixth pulse of hostage handovers. Footage from the event showed him standing alongside released hostages, including Ophir Engel and Amit Shani, as they were transferred to the Red Cross. This public appearance underscored his status within the PIJ's operational hierarchy in Deir al-Balah.
In August 2026, the IDF confirmed that Fatair had been eliminated in a targeted strike in the Deir al-Balah area. According to military intelligence, the strike was executed to neutralize an immediate threat, as Fatair had been actively planning new terror attacks against Israeli forces and civilians. His elimination was met with a public response from Rom Braslavski, who stated that Fatair had "destroyed my soul" during his time in captivity. The removal of Fatair represents the neutralization of a key link between the PIJ's elite Nukhba forces and its hostage-holding infrastructure.
