Matanyahu Anglemann is the outgoing State Comptroller of Israel (2019–2026), whose final years in office were marked by a push for real-time auditing of the systemic failures surrounding the October 7 massacre and a subsequent constitutional clash with the High Court of Justice.
Matanyahu Anglemann served as Israel's State Comptroller from 2019 through mid-2026. While his early tenure focused on administrative efficiency and a "constructive audit" approach, his legacy became inextricably linked to the investigation of the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack. Following the massacre, Anglemann pivoted the office toward aggressive, real-time oversight of military and political failures, a move that placed him at the center of a significant institutional struggle. In late June 2026, the High Court of Justice ruled that his independent probe into the security failures of October 7 was conducted "ultra vires" (beyond his legal authority), effectively halting the investigation in favor of a potential state commission of inquiry. Despite this, Anglemann's office released critical reports, including a June 2026 document detailing catastrophic coordination failures between the IDF and Magen David Adom (MDA) during the evacuation of the wounded. The report highlighted a total breakdown in communication and a lack of protective gear for first responders. In his final public appearances, Anglemann has been vocal about the friction between the audit office and the security establishment, revealing that IDF elements had recorded audit meetings without coordination. He has also warned of an "abnormal situation" regarding the freeze in appointing his successor, which has left the office in a leadership vacuum as of July 2026.
