Ministry of Health
The Ministry of Health is the Israeli government body responsible for the nation's public health policy, medical infrastructure, and emergency medical preparedness.
The Ministry of Health (Misrad HaBriut) serves as the supreme regulatory and administrative authority for Israel's healthcare system. Its mandate encompasses the oversight of public and private medical institutions, the management of national health emergencies, and the formulation of preventative health strategies. In the context of Israel's unique security environment, the Ministry plays a critical role in civil defense, ensuring that the medical system remains resilient under threat.
Recently, the Ministry has shifted its focus toward high-readiness protocols for large-scale conflict. This includes a major initiative to prepare all hospitals nationwide for relocation to protected underground facilities. This escalation in civil defense is designed to ensure the continuity of medical care and the safety of patients and staff during potential missile or unconventional attacks. The Ministry coordinates these efforts closely with the Home Front Command and individual medical centers.
Beyond security-related infrastructure, the Ministry monitors global health threats. It recently issued travel advisories for regions in Africa due to Ebola outbreaks and has begun distributing specialized protective equipment to medical teams within Israel. While the current risk of a domestic outbreak is assessed as low, these measures reflect the Ministry's proactive stance on biological and epidemiological threats. The Ministry also oversees the four national health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and manages several major government-owned hospitals, balancing its role as both a regulator and a direct service provider.
