The Ministry of Environmental Protection (MoEP) serves as the primary regulatory authority for safeguarding Israel's natural resources and public health from environmental hazards. Its mandate covers a broad spectrum of responsibilities, including air quality monitoring, waste management, hazardous materials oversight, and the protection of biodiversity. In the context of national security and resilience, the ministry plays a critical role in managing environmental crises, such as oil spills or chemical leaks, and ensuring that industrial growth does not compromise the long-term viability of the land.

One of the ministry's recurring public-facing functions is the monitoring and control of zoonotic diseases and pests. Working in coordination with the Ministry of Health, the MoEP monitors mosquito populations across Israel to detect the presence of pathogens like West Nile virus. When infected mosquitoes are identified, the ministry is responsible for issuing public warnings and directing local authorities to implement pest control measures, such as drying up standing water and conducting targeted spraying. This proactive approach is essential for preventing outbreaks that could strain the national healthcare system.
