The Rafah Brigade serves as one of the five regional brigades of the Hamas military wing in the Gaza Strip. Its strategic importance is paramount due to its control over the Rafah area, which includes the Philadelphi Route and the Rafah Border Crossing. For decades, this brigade has been the primary custodian of Hamas's underground and overground smuggling infrastructure, facilitating the transfer of weapons, dual-use materials, and funds from the Sinai Peninsula into the Gaza Strip. The brigade is composed of several battalions, typically including the East Rafah, West Rafah (Tel al-Sultan), Shaboura, and Yabna battalions.

In the context of the ongoing conflict, the Rafah Brigade has been a focal point for IDF operations aimed at dismantling Hamas's remaining organized military frameworks. The Israeli security establishment views the neutralization of this brigade as essential for severing Hamas's supply lines and preventing the group's rearmament. Recent military actions have targeted the brigade's senior leadership and its specialized smuggling units. The IDF has emphasized that many of the brigade's veteran commanders have been involved in logistical and combat operations for over 20 years, making them critical nodes in the organization's long-term resilience. As the IDF progresses in its southern Gaza maneuvers, the degradation of the Rafah Brigade's command structure and its tunnel networks remains a top priority for achieving the war's objective of ending Hamas's military governance.
