The Lead
Sheikh Mowafaq Tarif, the spiritual leader of the Druze community in Israel, eulogized Master Sergeant (Res.) Basil Sweid on Thursday morning, following the reservist's death in a vehicle accident in southern Lebanon. Sweid, 32, from the town of Peki'in, was killed Wednesday night when a refueling truck overturned during operational activity.
The death of Master Sergeant (Res.) Basil Sweid occurred at approximately 22:50 on Wednesday night in the area of Rabb el-Thalathine. According to an initial IDF inquiry, Sweid was serving as a driver in the 75th Battalion of the 7th Armored Brigade ('Saar me-Golan') when a vehicle belonging to the Golani Brigade's Combat Team overturned. Another soldier was moderately injured in the incident and evacuated to a hospital for treatment.
Leadership Tributes
Sheikh Mowafaq Tarif described Sweid as a "heroic martyr" who viewed his hundreds of days of reserve service as a mission and a privilege. "The Druze community continues to bear the burden and pay a very heavy and dear price," Tarif stated, noting that the community's finest young men are being lost in the ongoing conflict. Defense Minister Israel Katz also issued a statement, emphasizing the "partnership of fate" between the Druze community and the State of Israel, a bond he described as written in blood and heroism.
Community Impact
Sweid was a resident of the Druze town of Peki'in, where his funeral is scheduled to take place today at 17:00. Local reports noted that Sweid was a friend of Major Jamal Abbas, another Druze officer who fell in November 2023 during fighting in the Gaza Strip. The loss highlights the sustained contribution of Druze reservists who have remained on the front lines since the beginning of the multi-front war. The IDF continues to investigate the specific circumstances of the rollover to determine if mechanical failure or terrain conditions contributed to the fatal accident.
