Master Sergeant (Res.) Basal Swedel was a 32-year-old IDF reservist from the Druze community in Peki'in who served as a driver in the 75th Battalion of the 7th Armored Brigade ('Saar me-Golan'). He was killed on Wednesday night, June 24, 2026, when an operational vehicle—identified in some reports as a refueling truck—overturned during a mission in the area of Rabb el-Thalathine in southern Lebanon. The incident, which occurred at approximately 22:50, also left another soldier moderately injured.

In his civilian life, Swedel was a valued member of the administrative staff at Rambam Health Care Campus in Haifa, where he served as an operations coordinator. His colleagues described him as a dedicated professional whose loss left the hospital staff "shocked and pained." Swedel's death was met with widespread mourning across Israel, highlighting the profound contribution of the Druze community to national security. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz both issued statements honoring Swedel, with the Prime Minister describing him as a courageous soldier who embodied the "unbreakable bond" between the Druze community and the State of Israel.

Sheikh Mowafaq Tarif, the spiritual leader of the Druze community, eulogized Swedel as a "heroic martyr" who viewed his extensive reserve service—totaling hundreds of days—as a sacred mission. Swedel's funeral was held in his hometown of Peki'in on Thursday, June 25, at 17:00. His death underscores the heavy price paid by the Druze community in the ongoing multi-front conflict, particularly in the northern theater where local residents often serve in units defending their own Galilee region. The IDF has launched an investigation into the technical and environmental factors that led to the fatal vehicle rollover.
