The Lead
The IDF released a detailed biography on Friday of Lt. Col. Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon, 32, the commander of the 401st Armored Brigade's 52nd Battalion who was killed overnight in southern Lebanon. Ben Simhon fell alongside three of his soldiers when their command tank was struck by a Hezbollah munition near the village of Tebnine. His death marks the fourth time the 52nd Battalion has lost its commanding officer to combat injuries or death since the start of the war.
The biography published by the IDF paints a picture of a dedicated career officer who stepped into a critical leadership role during a period of intense combat. Lt. Col. Dor Ben Simhon, a resident of Kibbutz Beit HaShita, assumed command of the 52nd Battalion on April 20, 2026. He took the post just one week after the previous battalion commander, identified as Lt. Col. 'A', was severely wounded during fighting in Bint Jbeil. Ben Simhon led the battalion through two months of high-intensity operations in southern Lebanon before the fatal strike on his tank at approximately 00:20 Friday morning.### A Legacy of ServiceBen Simhon grew up within the 401st Armored Brigade, serving in nearly all significant command positions throughout his career. His professional path included a stint as the Chief of Staff to the Head of Northern Command during Operation Northern Arrows, a role he held until August 2025. After completing the Command and Staff course, he returned to the field to lead the 52nd Battalion. He came from a family of combatants; he and four of his brothers enlisted in the 401st Brigade, while a fifth brother served in the Golani Brigade. He is survived by his wife, who currently serves as a combat officer in the Border Defense Corps, and their two daughters.### Analysis of the 52nd Battalion's TollThe 52nd Battalion has faced an extraordinary leadership challenge during this conflict, with four successive commanders becoming casualties. Before Ben Simhon and Lt. Col. 'A', the battalion was led by Lt. Col. Yehuda Shalev, who was severely wounded in Jabalia in October 2024, and Lt. Col. Daniel Ella, who was wounded in Rafah in July 2024. This high turnover underscores the "command from the front" ethos of the 401st Brigade, which also saw its brigade commander, Col. Ahsan Daksa, fall in battle last year. The IDF is currently investigating the specific nature of the strike in Tebnine to determine if the tank was hit by an anti-tank missile or an explosive drone. Ben Simhon's funeral is scheduled for 14:00 Friday at the Beit HaShita cemetery.
