The Lead
Magen David Adom (MDA) confirmed Friday morning that one of the individuals wounded in a violent confrontation and shooting attack near the Havat Gilad community in Samaria has died at the scene. The incident began when a group of Israeli hikers was surrounded and attacked by dozens of Palestinians from the nearby village of Tel, leading to a struggle in which a security officer's weapon was snatched and used to open fire on the Israelis.
Fatal Escalation in Samaria
The security situation in Samaria escalated sharply on Friday morning following a deadly encounter between Israeli hikers and Palestinian residents of the village of Tel. According to reports from the scene and emergency services, a group of hikers from the "David and Ahikam" group was trekking on the Sela Ridge between Har Bracha and Havat Gilad when they were confronted by a large mob.
Magen David Adom paramedics responded to the scene to treat multiple casualties. While initial reports indicated several wounded in varying conditions, MDA later confirmed that one victim had succumbed to their injuries. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released for publication. At least one other individual remains in serious condition, while others sustained lighter injuries, including head wounds from stones thrown during the initial assault.
The Attack and Weapon Snatching
According to accounts from the hikers and initial IDF reports, the incident began near a local mosque in the village of Tel. As the confrontation intensified, security personnel from Havat Gilad were dispatched to the area. During the ensuing struggle, a Palestinian assailant managed to snatch the weapon of the community's security coordinator (Ravshatz).
The assailant then used the stolen firearm to open fire on the group of Israelis. Reports indicate that the security coordinator eventually managed to regain control of his weapon, but not before several people were hit by the gunfire. Witnesses at the scene claimed that soldiers initially hesitated to open fire as the mob approached, a factor that may have contributed to the proximity of the attackers and the subsequent weapon snatching.
IDF Response and Closure
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) deployed significant reinforcements to the sector. A military closure has been imposed on the village of Tel and several entrances to the city of Nablus as security forces conduct searches and investigate the circumstances of the attack.
This incident follows a period of heightened tension in the region. Havat Gilad, a community established in 2002, has recently been the focus of national attention following a major wildfire and ongoing security challenges. The village of Tel is identified by security sources as a known flashpoint for nationalist activity. The IDF is currently reviewing the rules of engagement and the conduct of the forces on the ground during the initial stages of the confrontation.
