The Lead
Russia launched a massive, multi-layered aerial assault across Ukraine overnight Monday, firing approximately 74 missiles and over 600 drones. The attack, which targeted Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro, resulted in the deaths of five rescue workers in Kharkiv who were struck by a 'double-tap' missile hit while responding to an initial explosion. Ukrainian air defenses reported a significant drop in effectiveness, intercepting only 14 of the 74 missiles launched.
Massive Combined Assault
According to material reviewed by The Zioneer Intelligence Desk, the Russian Federation executed a large-scale combined strike involving strategic bombers and ground-based launchers. The missile package included approximately 34 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles, 24 Kh-101 cruise missiles, 10 Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles, and 6 Iskander-K cruise missiles. In addition to the missile salvos, Ukrainian reports indicate that over 600 drones were utilized to saturate air defenses.
Tragedy in Kharkiv
In Kharkiv, the human cost was compounded by a 'double-tap' strike—a tactic where a second projectile hits the same location shortly after the first to target first responders. Five rescue workers were confirmed killed while performing their duties at a site of an initial strike. This follows earlier reports of casualties in both Kharkiv and Kyiv as the scale of the damage continues to be assessed.
Air Defense Challenges
Ukrainian air defense performance during this wave was notably lower than in previous months. Out of the 74 missiles detected, only 14 were successfully intercepted, including 6 Kh-101s, 5 Iskander-M/S-400s, 2 Iskander-Ks, and a single Zircon hypersonic missile. The primary focus of the Russian strikes appeared to be military and logistics infrastructure in Kyiv, including a warehouse in the southwestern part of the capital. Additional impacts were reported near Bila Tserkva and in Dnipro, though comprehensive damage assessments remain difficult due to a lack of immediate satellite data.
