The European Union has imposed sanctions on a unit of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) navy and two Iranian nationals for their role in closing the Strait of Hormuz to shipping, the EU said in an official statement. The sanctions target the Hormozgan District Command of the IRGC navy, along with Mohammad Akbar-Zadeh, deputy political commander of the IRGC navy, and Hamid Hosseini, a representative of Iran's oil, gas and petrochemical exporters union. This is the first time the EU has sanctioned Iran over restricting freedom of navigation in the strategic waterway.
