Dolev ben Atara, a 23-year-old reservist from Karmiel, was critically wounded on August 5 when a booby-trapped building collapsed on his unit in the village of Majdal Zoun in southern Lebanon. The incident also killed Maj. Harel Birenstock and Chief Master Sgt. Tamir Vaknin and seriously wounded three other soldiers.
Ben Atara was first identified by name in Israeli media reports on the afternoon of August 6, several hours after the IDF cleared casualty names for publication. He has been hospitalized at Rambam Health Care Campus in Haifa, sedated and ventilated, since the incident.
On August 9, Rambam reported that one of the four critically wounded soldiers had regained consciousness and was breathing independently, while three remained sedated and ventilated. As of August 10, ben Atara remains in critical condition, with his family publicly requesting prayers for his recovery. The IDF has not released further updates on his condition.
