01 · THE DISPATCH

The first Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) officer training course within the Israel Defense Forces reached a key milestone this week, as the 'field track' cohort of the HaHashmonaim Brigade completed its basic training phase at Tel Faher in the Golan Heights. The cadets ended the 12-kilometer march and received their platoon commander pins, the IDF said. They now move to four months of brigade-specific 'Gefen' training at Bahad 1, partly integrated with general infantry completion. The course is part of a series of unprecedented IDF initiatives over the past three years to integrate Haredi soldiers into command roles while preserving their religious lifestyle. The brigade commander, identified only by his initial 'Shin,' told the cadets they are 'the ark within the storm' as the country faces turbulent times.
