As The Zioneer reported earlier today, Katz instructed at 13:00 Jerusalem time not to renew the order that had been issued by Central Command chief Maj. Gen. Avi Blot. The decision came after a lengthy visit by Katz with Dradik in prison on Friday, and after Katz overruled the positions of the IDF and Shin Bet. The Defense Minister's office said the matter would be addressed through other means.
The case had drawn significant political pressure in recent days. On Sunday, 13 coalition MKs and ministers from Likud, Religious Zionism, and Otzma Yehudit urged Katz to cancel administrative orders against Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria and to release Dradik, as The Zioneer reported. Earlier, on Wednesday July 22, commentator Gadi Taub published an open letter warning of a "strategic danger" from the administrative detention policy. Dradik had been on a hunger strike for weeks, reaching day 17 on July 22, according to reports.
The administrative order was set to expire, and Katz's decision not to renew it effectively paved the way for Dradik's release. Honenu attorneys are now working with the military appeals committee and the prosecution to secure his swift release. It remains unclear what alternative measures Katz intends to pursue, as his office stated the matter would be handled through other means.
