At an exercise of the new 38th Division, IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir said the Yom Kippur War and October 7 exposed connected failures and called for constant readiness for a surprise war. He also said the division is becoming an operational General Staff reserve division.
Zamir visited the 38th Division’s exercise on Wednesday with Ground Forces Commander Maj. Gen. Nadav Lotan and Brig. Gen. Sharon Altit, the division’s commander and head of the Ground Forces Operations Brigade. The IDF said Zamir examined troops’ readiness for their missions. He said the division would establish itself over the coming year as a flexible General Staff reserve division able to operate in any arena, and said the IDF had halted a 20-year reduction in its size.
In an earlier report, The Zioneer reported Wednesday at 14:16 that Zamir had linked the failures of the Yom Kippur War and October 7 and said the IDF must prepare for a surprise war. The IDF also quoted him as saying that commanders must question their assumptions, identify signals from reality and adapt. At the exercise, Zamir said the military was examining the roots of the October 7 failure and working to implement lessons from it.
