Iran's Foreign Ministry confirmed Sunday that Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf will lead a delegation to Switzerland for talks with the US on the memorandum of understanding. A ministry spokesman said the focus will be on demanding the other side honor its commitments, warning that failure to implement any clause would jeopardize the entire MOU.
Despite Tehran's recent announcement about closing the Strait of Hormuz — which followed a broader escalation of rhetoric — Iran has not closed the door to continued negotiations, according to a statement reported Sunday. The Foreign Ministry confirmed that Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf will head the Iranian delegation to talks with the United States in Switzerland, centered on the memorandum of understanding and its implementation.
As The Zioneer reported Saturday night, Iran had announced the Hormuz closure earlier that evening while also sending Qalibaf to Switzerland; the two tracks have proceeded in parallel. The ministry spokesman, Esmail Baghaei, stated that Tehran will focus on demanding that the other side fulfill its obligations and clarify exactly how it intends to do so. Baghaei warned that if any part of the commitments is not realized, the entire MOU would be in jeopardy.
The statement marks a return to the diplomatic track after earlier signals of a freeze. On Friday, Iran had frozen talks and linked their resumption to a ceasefire in Lebanon. On Thursday, senior officials declared the MOU final and demanded payment for passage through the Strait of Hormuz. The current talks in Switzerland are set to address the implementation mechanism. It remains unclear whether the Hormuz closure announcement will be rescinded or remain in effect as leverage during the talks.
