The directive formalizes a series of commitments Netanyahu made earlier in the evening. Minutes later, Culture Minister Miki Zohar publicly backed the move, stating "the time has come to end this disgrace," as The Zioneer reported. By 19:49, Netanyahu had also unveiled specific government bills, including a proposal to raise defamation damages without proof of harm from 50,000 shekels to one million shekels — a twenty-fold increase.
The 'Naz'a' film, which is at the center of the controversy, was labeled a "blood libel" against the IDF by Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir earlier this week (Monday), as The Zioneer reported. Culture Minister Zohar had previously announced that any institution screening the film would be considered in violation of the anti-terror financing law and would have its government funding revoked.
The legislation will now be brought to the Ministerial Committee for Legislation and then to the Knesset for a vote. It remains to be seen how the bills will be formulated and what thresholds for revocation will be applied.
