New details emerged Tuesday afternoon in the disappearance of Eldar Dayan, 23, as police found a shirt belonging to him on Rokach Street in Petah Tikva, near where his vehicle was located. Dayan's mother, Shilat Na'im, told Channel 12 she fears someone is holding her son, adding that police have assured her they are certain he is alive and have leads. The discovery comes after police earlier assessed that Dayan was likely on the run, not kidnapped.
Earlier Tuesday, at 12:50 Jerusalem, a police source told N12 that the assessment that Dayan was on the run was strengthening, and police were investigating two leads: a possible kidnapping on criminal grounds, or a hit-and-run with obstruction of investigation. Two Dimona residents were arrested on suspicion of obstructing the probe, and a friend of Dayan, Maxim Broverman, had his arrest extended by six days by the Beersheba Magistrate's Court on suspicion of involvement in a hit-and-run. The final contact with Dayan was a WhatsApp message to his partner sent on July 17, saying 'There's a mess, sweetie, heading back to town.'
As The Zioneer reported earlier, police have not yet determined whether Dayan's disappearance is a kidnapping or a result of a traffic incident. The discovery of the shirt near his vehicle, along with his mother's fears, adds a new layer to the investigation that had been focused on the possibility that Dayan was in hiding.
What remains unclear is how the shirt came to be there and whether it indicates Dayan was in the area voluntarily or under duress. Police have not confirmed any abduction and continue to pursue both leads.
