Retired Brig. Gen. Erez Wiener, chairman of the Securityist Movement, assessed the emerging US-Iran memorandum of understanding as neither a cause for celebration nor despair. He cited Israeli achievements — striking the nuclear program, eroding missile production, weakening Iran's proxies, and breaking the psychological barrier of striking inside Iran — but warned that the agreement must not provide Iran with 'oxygen,' strengthen Hezbollah, or limit Israel's freedom of operation. 'The US is an ally,' Wiener said, 'but Israel must stand guard over its own interests.'
Retired Brig. Gen. Erez Wiener, chairman of the right-of-center Securityist Movement, issued an assessment Thursday evening of the emerging U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding, striking a measured tone that contrasted with his movement's earlier sharp criticism.
Wiener, a former senior IDF officer, acknowledged what he described as significant Israeli achievements in recent operations — damage to Iran's nuclear program, erosion of its missile production capacity, weakening of its regional proxies, and the psychological breakthrough of carrying out strikes inside Iranian territory. He argued these gains mean the MOU is 'not a reason for despair.'
However, Wiener cautioned that the agreement must not serve as a lifeline for the Iranian regime, strengthen Hezbollah, or constrain Israel's freedom of military action. 'The US is an ally. But Israel must stand guard over its own interests,' he said.
The statement comes amid a wave of Israeli political and security reactions to the reported framework. As The Zioneer previously reported, former INSS chief Tamir Heyman assessed the deal as a 'lifeline for Tehran and a strategic trap for Jerusalem,' while other Israeli security officials warned it undermines deterrence and could intensify pressure on Israel over Lebanon.
Wiener's remarks also implicitly respond to Hezbollah official Hassan Fadlallah, who earlier Thursday called the emerging agreement a 'strategic victory for Iran.'
