On Monday evening, August 31 at 19:44 Jerusalem, The Zioneer reported that the suspect had been indicted as recently as March for stealing a phone, and that during the abduction he used Yhali's phone to make a call and subsequently deleted the number from the call log. On the same date, The Zioneer also reported that the suspect claimed he took the boy with him while collecting money and intended to introduce him to friends in Ramat Gan.
Petah Tikva has seen previous serious incidents involving children. As The Zioneer reported on July 2, a man was arrested on suspicion of attempting to abduct an 11-year-old girl in broad daylight in the city, with bystanders intervening after she screamed. That suspect was also taken into custody.
