52nd Battalion, 401st Armored Brigade
The 52nd Battalion is a frontline armored unit within the IDF's 401st 'Iron Tracks' Brigade, currently engaged in high-stakes operations to dismantle Hezbollah's strategic infrastructure in southern Lebanon.
The 52nd Battalion, known as 'Ha-Bok'im' (The Breachers), is a core element of the 401st Armored Brigade, which operates under the 162nd Division. Historically one of the IDF's most decorated armored units, the battalion has been at the forefront of Israel's ground maneuvers in both the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon during the multi-front conflicts of 2024–2026. The unit utilizes the Merkava Mark 4 'Barak' main battle tanks, integrated with advanced digital command-and-control systems and the Trophy active protection system.
In June 2026, the battalion became a focal point of national attention following a lethal engagement in southern Lebanon. On Friday, June 19, the battalion commander, Lt. Col. Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon, was killed in action alongside three of his soldiers when their command tank was struck near the village of Tibnit (Tebnine). The incident occurred during a mission to assist other IDF forces in destroying strategic underground infrastructure that Hezbollah had developed over several decades near the Beaufort ridge. This network was identified by Israeli intelligence as a long-term investment designed to facilitate major cross-border attacks.
The battalion has demonstrated significant resilience during this period; Lt. Col. Ben Simhon had assumed command only two months prior, after his predecessor was severely wounded in combat. The loss of a second battalion commander in such a short interval underscores the intensity of the armored campaign against Hezbollah's tactical anti-tank and drone units. Despite these losses, the 52nd Battalion remains operational in the sector, continuing its mission to neutralize high-value assets within the designated security zone. The unit's performance is critical to the IDF's broader strategy of ensuring that Hezbollah cannot re-establish its offensive posture near the northern border.
