IDF admits 52nd Battalion commander killed Friday by Hezbollah ATGM; tank and bodies remain unrecovered

The IDF has provided a grim update on the lethal engagement that took place on Friday, confirming the death of a senior armored commander and the ongoing inability to recover the fallen. Lt. Col. Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon, who led the 52nd Battalion of the 401st Armored Brigade, was killed alongside three other crew members when their Merkava IV (Barak) tank was struck by a Hezbollah anti-tank guided missile. Two of the other fallen soldiers have been identified as Staff Sgt. Yoav Klein and Staff Sgt. Liav Kababia; the name of the fourth crew member has not yet been cleared for publication.

According to material reviewed by The Zioneer Intelligence Desk, the incident occurred during an attempt to capture a Hezbollah underground facility (UGF) at the strategic Ali al-Taher ridge. The strike resulted in the complete destruction of the tank, which was subsequently engulfed in flames. The military confirmed that as of early Sunday morning, the charred remains of the tank and the bodies of the crew members have not been retrieved from the battlefield due to the operational conditions at the site.

This development follows separate reports of heavy fighting in the same sector, including a coordinated Hezbollah attack involving rockets and drones that killed Staff Sgt. Nir Ben Ari of the Maglan unit and wounded 13 others. The loss of a battalion commander in such a direct engagement underscores the intensity of the current confrontation as IDF forces continue to target Hezbollah's infrastructure in the Nabatieh region. The military is investigating the circumstances of the strike and the specific ATGM systems employed by Hezbollah in the ambush.
