The Maglan Unit, officially designated as Unit 212, is a premier special operations force within the Israel Defense Forces, currently integrated into the Oz Brigade (Commando Brigade). Established in the mid-1980s, the unit's name—Hebrew for the Ibis bird—reflects its operational philosophy of remaining discreet while possessing the ability to strike with precision. Maglan's primary mission involves operating in complex terrain to locate and destroy high-value targets, often utilizing classified anti-tank missiles and advanced surveillance systems.

In the context of Israel's security doctrine, Maglan serves as a critical asset for multi-front resilience. The unit is frequently deployed to neutralize immediate threats that conventional forces may find difficult to reach. Its soldiers undergo one of the most rigorous training pipelines in the IDF, emphasizing navigation, camouflage, and independent operation in hostile environments. Beyond its technical capabilities, Maglan is deeply embedded in the tactical heritage of the military, working in close coordination with other elite units such as Yahalom and the Golani Reconnaissance Battalion.

Recently, Maglan has taken a central role in operations along the northern border. In June 2026, the unit was identified as a lead force in exposing and dismantling an extensive, Iranian-funded Hezbollah terror tunnel network beneath the Beaufort Ridge in southern Lebanon. Operating under the 36th Division, Maglan teams were instrumental in securing underground hubs that contained living quarters, medical facilities, and advanced weaponry intended for large-scale incursions into northern Israel. This mission underscores the unit's evolution from a specialized anti-tank force into a versatile commando element capable of managing complex subterranean and cross-border threats.
