Elor Azaria
Elor Azaria is a former IDF soldier whose 2016 conviction for the manslaughter of a neutralized Palestinian terrorist in Hebron sparked a decade-long national debate regarding military ethics, rules of engagement, and the relationship between the political echelon and the IDF command.
Elor Azaria, a former sergeant in the Kfir Brigade, became one of the most polarizing figures in modern Israeli history following an incident in Hebron on March 24, 2016. During the event, Azaria shot and killed a wounded Palestinian terrorist who had already been neutralized after carrying out a stabbing attack against IDF soldiers. The incident, captured on video, led to a high-profile military trial that divided the Israeli public. While the IDF leadership and military prosecution insisted on a strict adherence to the 'Purity of Arms' doctrine, a significant portion of the public and several political leaders viewed Azaria as a soldier who had been abandoned by the system while facing an active threat environment.
Azaria was ultimately convicted of manslaughter and served nine months of an eighteen-month prison sentence. For years, the case remained a symbol of the friction between the military's legal-ethical standards and the security-first sentiments of the Israeli right. In September 2026, the saga reached a significant milestone when President Isaac Herzog officially expunged Azaria's criminal record. This move was facilitated by Defense Minister Israel Katz, who signed the pardon recommendation as a gesture toward national reconciliation. The decision was met with institutional resistance from the IDF Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir, and the Military Advocate General, who argued that the lack of prior remorse and the importance of military discipline should have precluded such a pardon. However, the President's Residence later clarified that Azaria had expressed remorse during the formal pardon process, marking a shift from his previous public stance. The resolution of Azaria's legal status remains a landmark event in the ongoing discussion over the legal protections afforded to Israeli security personnel operating in Judea and Samaria.
