Kokhav Ya'ir is a prominent community located in the northern Sharon region of central Israel. Established in the 1980s and named after Abraham 'Yair' Stern, the leader of the Lehi underground, the town is characterized by its high socio-economic profile and its proximity to the Green Line—the pre-1967 armistice boundary. In 2003, it merged with the neighboring community of Tzur Yigal to form a single local council. Due to its location along the 'Seam Zone' (the area between the 1949 armistice line and the security barrier), Kokhav Ya'ir holds significant security importance. It sits adjacent to the Palestinian city of Qalqilya and several Israeli communities in western Samaria, such as Tzur Yitzhak and Sela'it. This positioning makes the area a sensitive focal point for security operations and, occasionally, a target for cross-border friction or nationalist violence. The community is largely composed of professionals, security officials, and families, reflecting a strong commitment to national resilience. On June 7, 2026, the community became the starting point of a 'rolling' terror attack. Assailants in a vehicle with Israeli license plates opened fire at a local gas station, wounding several civilians before continuing their assault through the neighboring towns of Tzur Yitzhak, Tzur Natan, and Sela'it. The incident, which resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, led to a temporary lockdown of the community and highlighted the ongoing security challenges faced by residents along the Sharon-Samaria seam zone.
