The Victim and the Fallen

Master Sergeant (Res.) Haim Kalomiti, a resident of Tzur Natan and a fighter in the 8881st Territorial Defense Battalion of the Ephraim Brigade, was killed while responding to the unfolding threat in his community. Kalomiti, 55, was a dedicated member of the local security infrastructure. Among the five other casualties, the security coordinator (Rabshatz) of Tzur Natan sustained serious injuries and is currently undergoing surgery at Meir Medical Center in Kfar Saba. Other victims are reported in moderate to light condition at Beilinson and Meir hospitals.

Timeline of the Attack

The terror spree began at approximately 10:30 AM when Omar Mander Yassin, a 21-year-old Israeli citizen from Tayibe, left his home in a stolen vehicle with Israeli license plates. The attack unfolded in rapid succession across four scenes:

1. Kochav Yair: Yassin opened fire at a gas station and a nearby McDonald's, wounding two civilians.

2. Tzur Yitzhak: The gunman proceeded to the entrance of the community, firing at the guard booth and wounding a security guard.

3. Tzur Natan: Continuing along the axis, he fired at the community's gate, where he encountered and killed Haim Kalomiti and seriously wounded the Rabshatz.

4. Sal'it: The attacker reached the gate of Sal'it in Samaria, where the local Rabshatz engaged him with a handgun, forcing the terrorist to flee.

Following a joint police-IDF manhunt, Yassin was identified and neutralized by police officers in an open area near the Tayibe quarries. An improvised 'Carlo' type submachine gun was recovered at the scene.

Analysis and Investigation

While initial reports suggested multiple gunmen, security officials confirmed that Yassin was the sole shooter. However, a significant development occurred with the arrest of a second suspect in Tayibe. According to police, this individual had claimed involvement and sought assistance in hiding. During the arrest operation, the suspect attempted to attack detectives with a glass bottle but was subdued without further casualties. This arrest points to a support network that may have facilitated the logistics of the attack, even if only one person pulled the trigger.

Eyal Zamir, who was visiting troops in Gaza at the time of the shooting, arrived at the scene to conduct a preliminary investigation alongside Central Command head Maj. Gen. Avi Blout. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the rapid response of the local security teams and police, while National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir reiterated calls for the implementation of the death penalty for terrorists.
