Mehrabad Airport
Mehrabad Airport is a strategic dual-use aviation hub in western Tehran. While serving as Iran's busiest domestic civilian airport, it functions as a critical logistics base for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and became a primary target of Israeli retaliatory strikes in June 2026.
Mehrabad Airport, situated within the urban fabric of western Tehran, represents one of the Iranian regime's most vital dual-use installations. Although long-haul international traffic was transitioned to Imam Khomeini International Airport in 2007, Mehrabad remains the central hub for domestic aviation and, more significantly, a primary operational node for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The airport houses extensive infrastructure for the IRGC Quds Force and has been identified as a key logistics center for the storage and transfer of advanced weaponry, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
During the direct military confrontation between Israel and Iran in June 2026, Mehrabad's strategic role made it a focal point of the conflict. Following a massive Iranian ballistic missile barrage against Israel, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched 'Operation Roaring Lion,' a series of precision strikes targeting military infrastructure across Iran. On June 8, 2026, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) targeted drone warehouses and air defense systems embedded within the airport's perimeter. These strikes were accompanied by reports of mass evacuations at the facility as the Iranian regime braced for sustained kinetic activity. The airport's proximity to central Tehran ensures that any military action there carries a high psychological impact, signaling the IDF's ability to strike sensitive assets deep within the capital. The destruction of military hardware at Mehrabad significantly disrupts the IRGC's ability to project power and manage aerial logistics during periods of high-intensity escalation.
