The Lead

Official farewell ceremonies for Iran's late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei commenced Friday morning at the Mosalla complex in Tehran, marking the start of a six-day state mourning period. The event, held four months after Khamenei was eliminated in an Israeli military strike, saw the attendance of high-level delegations from Russia, China, Iraq, and Turkmenistan, alongside senior Iranian officials.

The Iranian regime has launched its most significant public display of continuity since the February strike that eliminated Ali Khamenei and members of his family. On Friday morning, the coffin was displayed at the Mosalla complex in the capital, following reports that the remains had been preserved in cold storage for over four months. The ceremony serves as a strategic platform for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to demonstrate institutional stability during a volatile leadership transition.

International Attendance and Domestic Presence

According to Iranian diplomatic sources, delegations from approximately 100 countries and international organizations are expected to participate in the funeral proceedings. Early reports from the Mosalla complex confirmed the presence of representatives from Russia, China, Iraq, and Turkmenistan, as well as delegations from Malaysia, Lebanon, Pakistan, and Norway. Notably, the Iranian Foreign Ministry emphasized that European nations which supported Israeli and American actions against Iran were pointedly excluded from the invitation list. Domestically, the event was attended by IRGC Commander Ahmad Vahidi and other senior military figures, alongside families of those killed in the ongoing regional conflict.

The Funeral Itinerary

The current ceremonies in Tehran are the first stage of a multi-city procession designed to facilitate mass public mourning. Following the events in the capital on July 4-5, the body is scheduled to be transported to the religious center of Qom on July 7. The process will conclude on July 9 with a final burial in Khamenei's hometown of Mashhad, where he will be interred at the Imam Reza shrine. This itinerary follows the recent exhumation of the body from a temporary site in Qom, as previously reported by The Zioneer.

Strategic Outlook

For the Iranian leadership, the scale and international participation in these ceremonies are intended to counter narratives of regime collapse following the loss of its long-time architect of the 'Ring of Fire' strategy. By securing the presence of major powers like Russia and China, Tehran aims to signal that its strategic alliances remain intact despite the decapitation of its top leadership. Observers note that the transition period remains delicate, with the IRGC maintaining a high state of readiness as it attempts to consolidate power under a new leadership structure.
