The Lead
President Isaac Herzog issued a statement on Friday mourning the deaths of four IDF soldiers killed in combat in southern Lebanon, including Lt. Col. Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon, commander of the 52nd Battalion. The incident, which occurred overnight near the village of Tibnit, involved a strike on a tank that claimed the lives of the commander and three of his crew members.
President Isaac Herzog expressed deep sorrow on Friday morning, stating that Israel "awoke to bitter news" regarding the loss of four soldiers in Lebanon. Among the fallen is Lt. Col. Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon, 32, from Kibbutz Beit Hashita, who commanded the 52nd Battalion of the 401st Armored Brigade. Herzog noted that Ben Simhon assumed command approximately two months ago after the previous battalion commander was severely wounded in combat.
Incident in Tibnit
According to reports reviewed by The Zioneer Intelligence Desk, the fatal incident occurred around 00:20 in the village of Tibnit, located in the Nabatieh sector. A "suspicious target" struck the tank led by Ben Simhon, resulting in his death and the deaths of three other soldiers whose names are pending full clearance for publication. While some reports suggest an explosive drone strike, the IDF is still investigating whether the munition was a drone or an anti-tank missile. Following the strike, the IDF launched a series of retaliatory attacks against Hezbollah infrastructure in Nabatieh and surrounding areas.
Legacy of the 52nd Battalion
Lt. Col. Ben Simhon is the fourth commander of the 52nd Battalion to be hit during the current conflict. His predecessors, Lt. Col. Daniel Ella and Lt. Col. Yehuda Shalev, were wounded in Gaza, while his immediate predecessor was wounded in Bint Jbeil, Lebanon, in April 2026. Ben Simhon came from a family of combatants; four of his brothers served in the 401st Brigade, and his wife serves as a combat officer in the Border Defense Corps.
Strategic Context
The friction in southern Lebanon remains high despite the ceasefire framework established in April. Since that time, 23 IDF soldiers have fallen in the sector. In a separate incident overnight, a reserve officer was severely wounded and four NCOs were lightly injured by a Hezbollah explosive drone, further highlighting the persistent threat in the security zone.
