A week after footage surfaced showing a person in military uniform with an IDF rifle violently assaulting a Palestinian in Hawara, the defense establishment has not yet identified him, Army Radio reported Wednesday morning. The IDF says an in-depth check found he is not an active-duty soldier but likely a civilian carrying a weapon; police have arrested two civilians in the case, and additional arrests — including of soldiers — are expected. Investigators from the IDF's Military Police and police forensic units entered Hawara overnight to collect evidence.
A week after a viral video captured a man in full Israeli military uniform, carrying an IDF rifle from the Samaria Brigade, violently striking a Palestinian and knocking him to the ground in the West Bank village of Hawara, the security establishment has still not identified the perpetrator, Army Radio reported in its morning bulletin on Wednesday.
The IDF stated that after an 'in-depth investigation over the week, it emerged that he is not an active-duty soldier but apparently a civilian carrying a weapon whose identity is not yet known.' However, Army Radio said the rifle is an IDF weapon of the Samaria Brigade, and the man wore full military gear. The military had difficulty explaining how such a person entered the Palestinian village, according to the report.
Police confirmed to Army Radio that two civilians were arrested in connection with the incident and their remand was extended — they claimed under questioning they did not know the hooded man. Additional arrests are expected, including of soldiers who are not seen in the video. Overnight, investigators from the Military Police and police forensics entered Hawara to gather evidence and testimony, as The Zioneer earlier reported.
