01 · THE DISPATCH

The IDF announced Sunday morning that Capt. David Hazutt, 21, of Ashkelon, a platoon commander in the Golani Brigade's 12th Battalion, was killed in combat in southern Lebanon. According to the military's preliminary investigation, around 02:00 Sunday, soldiers from a Golani battle team entered a structure in the village of Deir Siryan, inside the Israeli security zone, and encountered a Hezbollah operative. The gunman opened fire at close range, killing Hazutt and lightly wounding another soldier. The wounded soldier was evacuated and his family notified. The Hezbollah operative fled the scene. After the incident, the IDF struck targets in the area with artillery and aircraft. The search for the gunman is ongoing, the military said. As The Zioneer previously reported, this is the latest in a series of IDF casualties during operations in southern Lebanon since the expanded ground operation began.
