A preliminary investigation indicates the fire may have been caused by a cigarette thrown from a passing vehicle.
The full extent of the wildfire that swept through the Samaria community of Havat Gilad on Saturday evening has been confirmed: 13 homes, a garage, and a lumber warehouse were destroyed, and two firefighters were injured, one moderately and one lightly, according to Israel Fire and Rescue Services. One fire engine was also lost. The blaze is now under control after 45 crews and eight aircraft battled it.
The Zioneer has been tracking the fire since initial reports Saturday afternoon. At 15:27 Jerusalem, we reported that the fire was spreading, with 13 homes damaged and four aircraft deployed. Shortly after, the fire service confirmed two firefighters wounded and 45 crews at the scene. By 22:00, we reported that the fire had destroyed the home of Yael Shevach, widow of Rabbi Raziel Shevach, who was murdered in a 2018 terror attack. At 01:05, we reported that residents who lost their homes held a Havdalah ceremony. Earlier reports from the Samaria Regional Council suspected arson and estimated 30 homes and businesses destroyed, but the fire service's final assessment stands at 13 homes.
The cause remains under investigation. Preliminary findings suggest a discarded cigarette from a passing vehicle may have started the fire, and authorities are working to identify the vehicle and driver. The community of Havat Gilad was evacuated to Yitzhar and nearby settlements during the fire, and a fundraising campaign for affected families has been launched.
