Saudi-aligned Yemeni forces retreated en masse, leaving the Houthis in a dominant position overlooking the strait.
The Houthi movement's capture of Mocha early Thursday was not a simple battlefield victory but a deliberate strategic trade: abandoning open desert areas in central and northern Yemen to concentrate forces on the Red Sea coast, according to The Zioneer's analysis of the past 24 hours. The calculated redeployment placed the Iran-backed group in a dominant position overlooking the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints.
The Zioneer first reported the fall of Mocha at 14:03 Jerusalem, noting that Saudi-backed Yemeni forces had collapsed across more than 2,000 square kilometers. The rapid advance continued: by 16:05, Houthi forces had captured the Al-Omari base and the Zubayr airport runway, bringing them within 30 kilometers of the strait. At 18:14 Jerusalem, Houthi channels released footage from the city, its port, and airport, while reports emerged that the group had freed prisoners from local jails. By 19:14, the Houthis had seized islands in the Red Sea and were pushing toward Perim Island, as a Yemeni general whose forces withdrew acknowledged a 'heavy price' and oil prices surged above $105 a barrel. Corroboration progressed from initial unverified claims to Houthi-provided video documentation and on-the-record admission by a Yemeni commander.
