The Bab el-Mandeb strait, whose name translates from Arabic as the 'Gate of Tears,' is one of the world's most vital maritime chokepoints. Located between Yemen on the Arabian Peninsula and Djibouti and Eritrea in the Horn of Africa, it serves as the southern gateway to the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. For the State of Israel, the strait is a strategic necessity, providing the primary maritime route for trade with Asia and the arrival of critical imports at the Port of Eilat.

In recent years, and specifically during the current multi-front conflict, the strait has become a primary theater for Iranian regional projection. Through its proxy, the Houthi movement (Ansar Allah) in Yemen, Tehran has effectively weaponized the strait to exert pressure on Israel and the international community. By utilizing anti-ship missiles, loitering munitions, and naval mines, the Houthis have repeatedly targeted commercial vessels, forcing major shipping companies to reroute around the Cape of Good Hope, thereby increasing global shipping costs and disrupting supply chains.

The Zioneer Intelligence Desk has tracked a significant escalation in rhetoric and kinetic activity surrounding the strait. Iranian officials, including senior advisor Ali Akbar Velayati, have explicitly threatened to 'squeeze economic arteries' by closing the Bab el-Mandeb in response to Israeli military pressure on Hezbollah. This 'strategic suffocation' tactic aims to decouple Israel from its eastern trade partners and challenge the freedom of navigation guaranteed under international law. The defense of this waterway remains a top priority for the IDF and international maritime coalitions, as its closure represents a direct threat to Israeli national resilience and global economic stability.
