Capt. David Hazutt, 21, a Golani Brigade platoon commander from Ashkelon, was killed in combat in southern Lebanon, the IDF announced as it released his name. He fell in the same operational incident reported earlier today near Deir Siryan.
The IDF authorized the publication of the name of Capt. David Hazutt, 21, a platoon commander in the Golani Brigade's 12th Battalion from Ashkelon, at 12:38 Jerusalem on Sunday, confirming his death in the same operational incident reported earlier that morning. In the incident, a Hezbollah operative opened fire on his force near the village of Deir Siryan around 02:00; the operative fled, and Israeli artillery struck the area. A second soldier was lightly wounded and evacuated. As previously reported, Hazutt's funeral is scheduled for 17:00 Sunday at the Givat Zion military cemetery.
At 12:38 Jerusalem, The Zioneer first reported that a Golani Brigade soldier was killed and another wounded in the encounter. Within minutes, the fallen soldier was identified as Captain David Hazut, and then more precisely as Capt. David Hazutt, 21, from Ashkelon, as the IDF released his name. The military's statement confirmed the officer's rank and unit: a platoon commander in the 12th Battalion of the Golani Brigade. The wounded soldier was later identified as lightly injured.
This incident continues a series of IDF casualties in southern Lebanon in recent days. As The Zioneer reported on June 18, a soldier was killed and a deputy division commander wounded by a Hezbollah IED. On June 20–21, five soldiers, including the commander of the 52nd Battalion, were killed when a Merkava IV tank was struck by an anti-tank guided missile.
The precise circumstances that led to the Hezbollah operative's ability to approach and fire on the Israeli force during the operation remain under investigation. The IDF has not disclosed whether the attacker was captured or killed.
