TL;DR

The IDF announced Sunday evening that its preliminary investigation into the death of Lt.-Col. Dor Gedalia Ben-Simhon — the 52nd Battalion commander — and three soldiers on Friday in southern Lebanon concluded that the tank was struck by an explosive drone. The incident is still under review, families have been notified.

01 · THE DISPATCH

The IDF confirmed Sunday evening that an explosive drone — not an anti-tank missile — struck the tank that killed Lt.-Col. Dor Gedalia Ben-Simhon, the 52nd Battalion commander, and three crew members on Friday in southern Lebanon. The military's preliminary investigation revised the initial assessment, which had attributed the strike to a Hezbollah ATGM earlier Sunday. Sunday evening's statement marks the first official identification of the weapon type, following a day of evolving reports.

As The Zioneer reported on Sunday June 21 at 01:08 Jerusalem, the IDF initially attributed the deaths to a Hezbollah anti-tank guided missile. By 07:50 Jerusalem the same day, the military released the names of the fallen — Lt.-Col. Ben-Simhon, Staff Sgt. Naveh Havshush, Staff Sgt. Yoav Klein, and Staff Sgt. Liav Kababia — all of the 52nd Battalion, 401st Armored Brigade. The narrative further shifted through the day: at 20:46 Jerusalem, multiple thread versions coalesced around the explosive-drone finding, with the IDF notifying families of the revised cause. The investigation remains ongoing.

The 52nd Battalion has suffered heavy losses in southern Lebanon this month. The Zioneer reported on June 17 that five soldiers were wounded by an explosive drone in the area, and on June 7 that four reserve soldiers were moderately wounded by a similar attack. The battalion commander himself had stepped in after his predecessor was wounded, as President Herzog noted in a eulogy on June 19. The tank crew was struck near the Ali al-Taher ridge.

What remains open is the precise sequence of events — how an explosive drone penetrated the tank's defenses to inflict such casualties — and whether the IDF can extract operational lessons from the incident. The military said the investigation is ongoing and families have been briefed.
