The Israel Free Movement (Israel Hofsheet) welcomed the High Court of Justice's interim order Tuesday evening blocking the law that would have frozen arrests of Haredi yeshiva students evading military service. Movement director Uri Kedar stated that the organization expects the court to ultimately annul the legislation, calling the government's attempt to create different standards for different types of draft evaders unacceptable. The movement was the first to petition against the law.
The High Court issued the interim order at 17:58 Jerusalem, according to N12 news reports. The Movement for Quality of Government hailed the decision as "a victory for equality, rule of law, and state security," saying it halts the creation of two classes of draft evaders — secular and Haredi. The order remains in effect until a final ruling.
The legal challenge comes amid a broader controversy over the Haredi draft law. As The Zioneer previously reported, the Attorney General told the High Court that the law is unconstitutional and must be annulled. Opposition parties Yesh Atid and Yisrael Beytenu filed petitions against the legislation. Earlier, the government faced internal opposition from coalition MKs Sharren Haskel, Yuli Edelstein, and Dan Illouz.
The case continues. The interim order blocks implementation of the law pending a final decision. Kedar expressed confidence that the court will strike down the law entirely.
