A ZAKA special missions unit, on behalf of the World Zionist Organization, exhumed the remains of Simeon Leib and Rebecca Herzl from the Jewish cemetery in Belgrade on Wednesday, the WZO said. The remains will be flown to Israel and reburied at Mount Herzl next week, alongside their grandson, Theodor Herzl.
The Zioneer reported earlier Wednesday that the WZO had led a four-year diplomatic effort to secure the exhumation and transfer of the remains from Serbia. The operation, which involved coordination with Serbian authorities, was aimed at fulfilling Herzl's vision of uniting his family in Jerusalem.
The reburial, scheduled for next week, will mark the culmination of a process that began 77 years after Herzl's own remains were brought to Jerusalem in 1949. ZAKA's special missions unit, which handles sensitive repatriations and disaster victim identification, is carrying out the exhumation on the ground.
The WZO said the event honors the continuity of the Zionist enterprise and the Herzl family legacy.
