Ansarallah (Houthi movement)
Ansarallah, commonly known as the Houthi movement, is a Zaydi Shia Islamist organization in Yemen and a primary Iranian proxy within the 'Axis of Resistance.' Since 2023, the group has significantly expanded its operational reach, utilizing Iranian-supplied ballistic missiles and drones to target international shipping and Israeli territory.
Ansarallah emerged from northern Yemen as a religious and political movement before seizing the capital, Sana'a, in 2014. While rooted in the Zaydi Shia minority, the movement has evolved into a sophisticated military force heavily subsidized and directed by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Its official slogan includes the phrase 'Death to Israel, Curse upon the Jews,' reflecting its ideological alignment with the Iranian regime's regional objectives. For Israel, the Houthi movement represents a strategic threat on its southern flank. The group has leveraged Yemen's geography to disrupt the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical maritime artery for Israeli and global trade. Beyond economic warfare, Ansarallah has repeatedly launched long-range munitions toward Eilat and central Israel. These attacks are often coordinated with other Iranian proxies under the 'Unity of Theaters' doctrine, which seeks to overstretch Israeli air defenses by initiating simultaneous threats from Lebanon, Gaza, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. In June 2026, the group's role in regional escalation intensified following reports of explosions in major Iranian cities. While Iranian state media initially sought to distance the central government from these domestic blasts, official rhetoric suggested potential Houthi involvement, even as Ansarallah spokesmen explicitly linked their missile launches toward Israel to the broader regional confrontation. This shift highlights the group's utility to Tehran as a deniable yet lethal instrument of the 'Axis of Resistance.'
