Hamas Northern Gaza Brigade
The Northern Gaza Brigade is a primary regional military framework of Hamas's Al-Qassam Brigades, responsible for operations in the northern sector of the Gaza Strip. It played a central role in the October 7, 2023, massacre and has been a focal point of IDF efforts to dismantle the terror group's command structure and subterranean infrastructure.
The Northern Gaza Brigade is one of the five regional brigades that constitute the military wing of Hamas. Geographically, it oversees terror operations in areas including Jabalia, Beit Lahia, and Beit Hanoun. Due to its proximity to the Israeli border, the brigade has historically been the primary launchpad for rocket fire and cross-border infiltration attempts targeting Israeli civilian communities.
During the October 7, 2023, terror attack, the Northern Gaza Brigade was instrumental in the breach of the security fence and the subsequent massacres in the Gaza envelope. Intelligence indicates that its leadership was deeply involved in the development of the Nukhba special forces, which spearheaded the invasion. Beyond tactical combat, the brigade has been directly implicated in the management of the hostage crisis, with its commanders overseeing the captivity of numerous Israelis within the northern sector's dense urban and subterranean environments.
Since the start of the IDF's ground maneuver, the brigade has faced systematic degradation. Israeli forces have focused on destroying its extensive tunnel network—some segments of which were found to cross into Israeli territory—and eliminating its senior leadership. The brigade's ability to maintain command and control has been severely hampered by the loss of key figures, including Izz al-Din al-Bik, who was confirmed killed in October 2024. Despite these losses, remnants of the brigade continue to engage in guerrilla-style warfare, utilizing civilian infrastructure to launch anti-tank missiles and plant explosive devices against IDF troops. The ongoing operations in northern Gaza represent a strategic effort to ensure the brigade cannot rehabilitate its capabilities or re-establish Hamas's governance in the region.
