The Israeli Fire and Rescue Services (IFRS) operates as the primary emergency response body for non-medical civilian crises across Israel. Established in its current nationalized form following the 2010 Carmel Forest fire, the authority transitioned from a decentralized collection of municipal services to a unified national command. This restructuring was designed to ensure standardized training, equipment, and operational doctrine, which are essential for navigating Israel's unique security landscape.
In routine times, the IFRS manages approximately 90,000 incidents annually, ranging from urban structure fires and brushfires to complex vehicle extractions and hazardous material spills. The organization comprises roughly 2,000 professional firefighters supported by a network of 3,000 volunteers, operating out of over 120 stations nationwide. During periods of high-intensity conflict, such as the current escalation involving Iranian and Hezbollah missile threats, the IFRS plays a strategic role in national defense. Firefighters are often the first on the scene of missile impacts, tasked with extinguishing blazes in residential areas and rescuing civilians trapped in damaged structures.
The authority works in close coordination with other emergency bodies, including Magen David Adom (MDA), the Israel Police, and the IDF Home Front Command. Its responsibilities extend to public education and the enforcement of fire safety regulations through business licensing. As regional threats evolve—specifically the risk of large-scale fires resulting from ballistic missile barrages in the Sharon and central regions—the IFRS remains a frontline guarantor of Israeli civilian safety and property protection.
