Israeli Military Police
The Israeli Military Police (MPCID) is the IDF corps responsible for law enforcement within the military, criminal investigations of service members, and the management of military detention facilities.
The Israeli Military Police (MPCID) serves as the internal law enforcement arm of the Israel Defense Forces. Its primary mission is to ensure military discipline and investigate criminal activity involving IDF personnel. The corps operates several specialized units, most notably the Military Police Criminal Investigations Division (MPCID), which handles sensitive cases ranging from drug offenses to operational misconduct. Beyond investigations, the corps is responsible for the operation of military prisons and detention centers, as well as traffic control for military convoys and the enforcement of appearance and behavior standards across the force.
In recent years, the Military Police has found itself at the center of significant social and political friction within Israeli society. One of its most sensitive tasks is the apprehension of draft evaders (deserters). As the debate over Haredi enlistment intensifies, Military Police units tasked with arresting those who fail to report for duty often face organized resistance. These operations frequently draw hundreds of protesters from extremist factions, such as the Jerusalem Faction, who attempt to physically block arrests and harass officers. This dynamic places the corps at the front line of the internal Israeli struggle over the 'People's Army' model and the limits of military authority over non-serving sectors.
Additionally, the Military Police plays a critical role in wartime and operational security. This includes the management of security crossings in Judea and Samaria and the processing of detainees captured during combat operations. The corps must balance the strict requirements of military law with the complex realities of Israel's security environment, often operating under intense public and legal scrutiny.
