Nechemya Perlman

Nechemya Perlman was a prominent figure in the movement to establish and strengthen Jewish roots in the Samaria region, specifically focusing on the strategic and biblical site of Mount Ebal. Known for his persistence and ideological clarity, Perlman viewed the mountain—historically identified as the site of Joshua's Altar—as a critical location for national and spiritual restoration. His efforts were characterized by a long-term vision that often spanned decades, working closely with local leadership to ensure that the Jewish connection to the site remained unbroken despite political and security challenges.

Perlman's legacy is closely tied to the Samaria Regional Council and its leadership. Yossi Dagan, the head of the council and a close personal friend, has described Perlman as a man who dedicated his entire life to the cause of Mount Ebal. This dedication was exemplified by his initiation of a Torah scroll project in 1999, intended specifically for a future permanent Jewish institution on the mountain. Although Perlman did not live to see the completion of this specific vision, his family and colleagues continued his work. In July 2026, twenty-seven years after the project began, the Torah scroll was finally installed in a new yeshiva established on the mountain, marking a significant milestone in the realization of his life's mission. Perlman is remembered as a pioneer whose quiet determination laid the groundwork for the current Jewish presence in one of the most historically significant areas of Judea and Samaria.
