Heavy ground combat broke out in southern Lebanon on Friday as Hezbollah forces engaged an advancing IDF armored and infantry column near Kfar Tebnit and the Mount Ali Taher heights. While Hezbollah claimed to have lured Israeli forces into a pre-prepared "killing zone," Israeli media confirmed a severe security incident in the sector that remains under military censorship. In response, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) launched extensive retaliatory strikes across southern Lebanon and the Beqaa Valley, targeting over 20 villages.
Heavy Combat in Nabatieh Sector
Heavy fighting erupted in southern Lebanon as Hezbollah forces engaged an advancing IDF armored and infantry column near Kfar Tebnit and the Mount Ali Taher heights. Hezbollah claimed its fighters lured an IDF force into a pre-prepared "killing zone," using guided missiles and artillery. The group claimed that three Merkava tanks were destroyed in the engagement. Hezbollah also reported a secondary ambush targeting an Israeli recovery force sent to retrieve casualties under smoke cover.
Israeli media confirmed a severe security incident in southern Lebanon that remains under military censorship. Reports reviewed by The Zioneer indicate that an IDF tank struck an "unusual" explosive device, while a guided missile attack disabled two additional vehicles. Wounded soldiers were reportedly evacuated by helicopter from the scene.
Extensive IAF Retaliatory Strikes
Following the incident, the IAF initiated extensive retaliatory strikes across southern Lebanon and the Beqaa Valley. The IDF stated these strikes were a response to Hezbollah’s repeated violations of the ceasefire and continued attempts to execute terror attacks against Israeli personnel. Strikes heavily targeted the area between the Litani and Zahrani rivers, including Nabatieh al-Fawqa, Kfar Tebnit, and Adshit near Beaufort Castle.
According to the Hezbollah-run Lebanese Ministry of Health, the strikes eliminated 18 individuals and wounded 33 others. Civil Defense officials claimed a pre-dawn strike in Harouf eliminated 8 terrorists. Israeli media reported the elimination of at least 15 terrorists across the various strike zones.
Regional Diplomatic Fallout
The escalation has immediate diplomatic consequences. Reports indicate that Iran has suspended the start of 60-day negotiations with the United States, which were set to take place in Switzerland. Iranian officials reportedly cited the Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon as a violation of the ceasefire agreement. This development comes amid increasing pressure on the diplomatic track following the lethal drone strike earlier this week that killed a senior IDF battalion commander.
